…tasked Race Furniture to transform the public’s experience at its Covent Garden home and make the building a more welcoming space. As part of the ‘Open Up’ project, a £50.7m refurbishment, Race designed, manufactured, delivered, and installed over 400 seats into the newly refurbished Linbury Theatre.
The Solution
Race Furniture worked closely with the Architect Stanton Williams and theatre consultants Charcoal Blue together with the contractor Rise to ensure the correct design and layout of the seating. The product specified was a customised version of the Race Tempest Seat, a versatile theatre seating system that allows the designer to customise its appearance to suit the unique demands of each space. Whilst maintaining the overall design of the seats, there were a variety of permutations that included floor fixed, removable, riser mounted, higher/taller seats and seating adapted for a retractable platform.
The Outcome
In partnership with Hussey Seatway, who designed and manufactured a pioneering retractable system, we successfully completed the seating package on time and on budget. The Evening Standard described it as ‘a modern take on a Renaissance theatre’ and that ‘the handcraft is palpable.’
